Commemoration to honour Nato’sa’pi in Siksika

(September 21, 2021 – Siksika Nation) Siksika Nation Chief and Council is hosting the Nato’sa’pi Commemoration ceremony on September 22nd, 2021 at 10:30am in Siksika to honour Nato’sa’pi (1819-1897) and bring awareness of the final resting place of respected Chief of the Blackfoot, famously known as Chief Old Sun. 

Nato’sa’pi was well-known as a Head Chief of the Siksika people and a signatory for Treaty Number 7, representing the North Blackfoot in 1877. His name and legacy still live on in the community including in the names of two schools in Siksika; Old Sun Community College and Chief Old Sun Elementary School.

The Commemoration ceremony will take place at the final resting spot of Chief Old Sun, located near the Canon Stockton Cemetery in North Camp, Siksika. The ceremony is open to the public and will commence with an opening prayer and remarks from Siksika Nation Chief and Council, Old Sun Community College and Siksika Board of Education followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to honour Nato’sa’pi.
