Oki,
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former colleague, Jerry Black Horse, who served Siksika Nation Public Works with dedication and pride for many years. Jerry first joined Public Works in 1976, and for decades he was a steady and respected presence on the Roads team as a grader operator. His commitment to keeping our community safe and connected left a lasting mark on the Nation, and many of the roads we travel today were shaped by his hands and his care.
Jerry worked his final day with us on March 29, 2013, closing a remarkable chapter of service that spanned generations. He was not only a valued co-worker, but a husband, father, and grandpa. At 84 years old, Jerry lived a full life, and our thoughts are with his family as they grieve his loss. He is now reunited with his late wife, Yvonne Black Horse, who passed on September 7, 2020.
Jerry’s legacy continues within our department through his grandchildren—Jerry (Chance) Black Horse with Community Systems Water & Wastewater, and Lianna Ayoungman, our Admin Specialist for Water & Wastewater. We hope they take comfort in knowing that Jerry’s contributions and spirit continue to be felt in the work we do every day.
From the Manager
On behalf of Infrastructure and Public Works, I want to express my deepest condolences to the Black Horse and extended families. Jerry was part of the foundation of what Public Works is today. His hard work, reliability, and commitment to serving the Nation set an example for all of us who followed. Though many years have passed since his time with us, his impact remains visible in our roads, in our department, and in the generations of his family who continue his legacy of service.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Lyle Breaker,
Siksika Nation Infrastructure and Public Works Manager
