Oki, Siksika Nation Members,
Siksika Nation Emergency Management wishes to bring attention to the current environmental conditions on the Nation. In addition to the current Fire Restriction in effect, we are experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of moisture that have left our grasslands and vegetation exceptionally dry.
Because dry grass and brush act as fuel, it is important for everyone to remain vigilant and practice fire safety to prevent accidental ignitions during this period of increased risk.
Safe Practices for the Community
We encourage all residents to be mindful of the following when outdoors:
- Household Recreational Fires: If you are using a backyard fire pit, please monitor it closely. Ensure the fire is contained, kept at a manageable size, and fully extinguished with water or dirt before leaving the area.
- Tobacco Disposal: Please ensure all smoking materials are disposed of safely. Never toss cigarettes into ditches or dry grass. Use proper containers to ensure they are completely out.
- General Ignition Sources: Be aware that sparks from lawn equipment, ATVs, or welding can quickly ignite dry vegetation. Avoid idling vehicles in tall, dry grass.
- Clearance: Consider clearing dry leaves and debris away from your home and outbuildings to create a small safety buffer.
Stay Vigilant
In these conditions, time is of the essence. Quick reporting can prevent a small spark from becoming a major incident.
IF YOU OBSERVE SMOKE OR FLAMES, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.
Please provide the dispatcher with as much detail as possible regarding your location and the direction of the smoke.
Kiitamatsin.
