Oki Siksika.
Given the hazardous road conditions, we will close the Tribal Administration Office today out of an abundance of caution and safety.
Travel within the Nation is currently hazardous due to deteriorating weather conditions. Exercising caution is highly recommended for all motorists.
CURRENT ROAD CONDITIONS
Highway 1:
- General Status: The corridor between Calgary and Siksika is reported as partly covered to covered with snow and ice.
- Visibility: Reported as poor in several areas due to blowing snow.
- Accumulation: A heavy snowfall warning remains in effect. Total accumulations of 15 to 30 cm are expected through this evening, which is causing rapid changes to road surfaces.
East of Calgary (Chestermere to Gleichen/Siksika): Expect heavy drifting consistent with what you’ve seen on the Nation’s internal maps. High winds are creating snow ridges across the lanes.
- West of Calgary: Road conditions are difficult to navigate; visibility is significantly reduced at times.
- Surrounding Routes: Nearby Highway 9 is facing even higher accumulations (up to 40 cm), and Highway 901 is confirmed to be icy with vehicles in the ditch
Highway 901: Developing icy patches. Extreme care should be taken as traction is limited.
East side Roads: Significant snow drifting is occurring. Some routes may become impassable if conditions persist.
Westside Roads: Full snow cover reported with localized drifting over the roadway.
Map 10: General road conditions are reported as poor.
Recommendations
- Avoid Non-Essential Travel: If you do not need to be on the roads, please stay home until maintenance crews can address the drifting and ice.
- Reduce Speed: Adjust your driving to the conditions. Icy roads require significantly longer braking distances.
- Emergency Kit: Ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter supplies, including blankets, a shovel, and a charged mobile device.
