Oki Siksika,
Why Do I Have Two Numbers? Understanding Status vs. Siksika Membership
The short answer:
Siksika members often have two different numbers because they come from two different authorities:
• Canada issues your Status (Registration) number
• Siksika Nation issues your Band Membership number
Both are important — but they serve different purposes.
What is my Status (Registration) Number?
Your Status number comes from the Indian Registry, maintained by the Government of Canada under the Indian Act.
It is used for:
- Status card eligibility
- Federal programs and benefits – HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION
- Treaty-related rights
- Tax exemptions on reserve
- Legal recognition as a Status Indian
Controlled by: Indigenous Services Canada
What is my Siksika Membership Number?
Your Membership number shows that you belong to the Siksika Nation community.
It is used for:
- Band elections and voting
- Per Capita Distributions (PCD)
- Local Nation programs and services
- Community planning and statistics
- Nation governance
It cannot be used for Healthcare or Education
Controlled by: Siksika Nation through the Membership Code.
If you have questions about your membership, registration, or PCD eligibility, please contact the Siksika Membership Department: Membership@siksikanation.com
