There has been a confirmed case of Canine Parvovirus in the Map 7 Cluny community. Parvovirus is highly contagious amongst unvaccinated dogs but cannot be transferred to humans. If your dog has received MORE than one vaccination, they are at low risk of contracting the virus; however, if your dog has recently received its first set of vaccinations, they are only partially protected and may still be at risk. Full immunity is reached once a dog has received a parvovirus vaccination and a follow-up booster. Dogs can contact parvovirus through close contact with infected dogs or coming into contact with contaminated environments, objects, and/or feces. Humans can also pass parvovirus from one pet to another through touch, and contaminated clothes and shoes.
Puppies are at a higher risk of contracting canine parvovirus. It is possible that puppies that received their first vaccines and booster vaccines may still have been exposed.
Please monitor your dogs for any of the following symptoms:
- severe or persistent vomiting
- Diarrhea which may contain blood
- Loss of appetite
- Extreme tiredness or weakness
- Dehydration
- Abdominal pain
- Or rapid decline in overall condition
If your dog shows any symptoms or you suspect your dog has canine parvovirus, contact a veterinarian and take your dog in for immediate medical care.
If your dog has tested positive for canine parvovirus, you MUST under section 24.01 of the Siksika Nation Dog Care and Control By-Law No. 2016-01; report the dog to Siksika Animal Services, keep the dog in a controlled environment to prevent further spread of the virus, and follow the direction of a registered veterinarian.
