Oki Siksika,
Siksika Land Management is pleased to advise Siksika Nation members that the EMAP Road Name Project is moving forward as part of the Nation’s broader road naming and signage initiative. This work is an important step in improving road identification across Siksika Nation for community members, visitors, service providers, and emergency responders.
The project has been guided by Siksika Land Management, Siksika Emergency Management, Bridgeway Partners, Siksika Housing, Siksika Public Safety, Community Technical and Facilitation advisors, and the Elder Advisory Panel. Together, this work has supported the naming and renaming of primary roads and communities using both Blackfoot and English, reflecting Siksika Nation’s commitment to Blackfoot language revitalization, cultural continuity, and place-based identity.
In addition to honouring our language and history, the project is intended to strengthen public safety. Clear road names and signage help emergency services, deliveries, utilities, and other service providers locate homes and community areas more quickly and accurately when needed.
Road sign installation will take place in phases, beginning in priority areas and continuing as production, delivery, and installation schedules are completed. Members may notice survey, placement, staking, and sign installation activity in different areas of the Nation as this work proceeds.
This initiative reflects the knowledge of Elders and families who have helped ensure that road names carry cultural and linguistic meaning. Over 18 months, Elders shared stories, history, and interviews to help develop these names with care and respect. It also supports long-term consistency through the Siksika Road Naming Policy, which provides guidance for future naming and renaming on Siksika Nation lands.
Siksika Nation members are encouraged to watch for updates through Siksika media channels and future public communications as installation progresses. While this work was completed with great care, the project team recognizes that there may still be some errors. Any requests for edits related to spelling or translation should be submitted by August 4, 2026. We thank members, Elders, families, and project partners for their continued support of this important community initiative.
Kiitakitamaatsin!
