Oki Siksika,
Siksika Land Management is seeking community members for assistance in identifying and reporting areas where Black Henbane, also known Stinking Nightshade (Hyoscyamus Niger), may be growing on Nation Lands.
Important safety note: All parts of Black Henbane are poisonous to people and animals if ingested. Please do not touch, pick, move, or attempt to remove the plant yourself. Report suspected locations to Siksika Land Management.
Why this plant is a concern: Black Henbane is an invasive annual or biennial plant that spreads by seed. A single plant can produce up to half a million seeds in one season, and seeds may remain viable for several years. The plant contains toxic alkaloids and may cause serious poisoning in humans or animals if eaten.
Where it grows: Black Henbane can grow in a range of soil types but prefers well-drained areas and does not tolerate shade.
Please see the notice below for further details on how to identify Black Henbane and what community members should do.
