Siksika Nation Declares State of Local Emergency (SOLE)

In response to the extreme cold weather impacting Siksika Nation at this time, a special called Ohkinninna and Ninaaks (Chief and Council) Meeting was held this morning, and the following motion was approved:

“A MOTION was MADE and SECONDED to enter into a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) due to the extreme cold weather, effective January 13, 2024.”

Siksika Nation Chief and Council along with the Siksika Emergency Management Team and Administration Essential Services is working together to assist Nation members who are impacted by this.

As of now the following supports are in place for those who have no heat and need a warm place to wait it out while these issues are being addressed:

• The Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex is now open to Siksika Nation members who currently have no heat in their homes.
• Transportation is available to those who need a ride to the Sportsplex. Please call 403-734-3815 to make arrangements for transportation.
• Families with elders and children who still have no heat in their homes please contact Tom Many Heads at 403-361-1527 to make arrangements for hotel accommodations.
• Continue to follow Siksika Nation Tribal Administration social media for regular updates.

Please note that SOLE will be in place for the next couple days until it’s deemed safe, and emergency has dissipated. For emergency assistance we do ask that calls continue to be made to the dispatch number at 403-734-3815.
