SORAH breaks ground in Calgary neighbourhood

The Siksika Off-Reserve Affordable Housing (SORAH) project broke ground on June 8, 2026, in Calgary’s Erin Woods community, marking the next step in expanding affordable urban housing units for Siksika Nation members.

SORAH’s Erin Woods developments will create 60 Calgary units for Nation members, approximately half of whom live in the city, according to Chief Samuel Crowfoot.

“Although they are considered off reserve, they’re still within their homes. They’re still within their territory,” said Crowfoot, remarking on traditional Blackfoot territory.

Elder Clement Leather blessed the grounds in a ceremony before Spike Eagle Speaker Jr. led an honour song and a chief song. The event also featured performances by Siksika Nation dancers Melodie Hunt-Ayoungman, Steve Hunt and Caydence Threesuns.

Councillors Candace Backfat, Louise Doore, Stephen Yellow Old Woman, Tracy McHugh, Darrel Daniels, Owen Cranebear & Jamie Spring Chief attended alongside Chief Crowfoot.
