Climate Change Impacts on Potable Water

Siksika Nation has completed a study to better understand the impacts of climate change on the quantity and quality of potable water from groundwater wells within the Nation. The report “Climate Change Impacts on Potable Water” by Kerr Wood Leidal (KWL) analyzes the predicted climate change impacts to the existing groundwater aquifers, assesses groundwater quality challenges, and identifies recommendations and next steps for ensuring a resilient groundwater supply within Siksika Nation. Oki Siksika Elders The Elder Repair program is about to begin, so we are providing this update to you on what is happening over the next few weeks. We are waiting for the repair schedule to be provided by Westcor Construction, the repair partner who is in charge of the program. Over the next two weeks, team members from Westcor will tour some of the homes to get a sense of the required repairs. On November 1st, 2023 Siksika Nation Chief and Council organized a community information session at the Siksika Piikapsi Memorial Arbour to provide information on the TOPGAS and OMAC Specific Claim.  In a statement released by Chief and Council in October 2023, the claim relates to Canada’s collection of royalties for gas produced on Siksika’s Reserve. On April 19, 2021, Siksika Nation (“Siksika”) filed the TOPGAS and OMAC Specific Claim (the “Claim”). The Claim relates to Canada’s collection of royalties for gas produced on Siksika’s Reserve. The Claim alleges that Canada breached its fiduciary and statutory duties in collecting royalties for gas produced on the Reserve. Siksika seeks equitable compensation for the financial losses arising from Canada’s failure to collect all of the royalties owing to Siksika for gas produced on the Reserve and the loss of use of those royalties.
